Namsai, 13th May 2023: A sapling distribution programme was held at Lathow village of Namsai here on Saturday. ZPC, Nang Urmila Macheykhun attended the event as Chief Guest and DDM NABARD, Kamal Roy as Guest of Honour. The other participants were the CEO, of NOSAAP, Chau Athina Chauhai; representatives from Panchayati Raj Department; ArSRLM; SHGs and farmers.
The saplings were funded by ZPC Namsai from State Own Revenue (SOR) to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and it was implemented by the Department of Panchayati Raj in collaboration with District Administration, NABARD, NOSAAP, & ArSRLM through Convergence.
During the event saplings of Arecanut, Cinnamon, Cocoa, Malta Mosambi and Banana were distributed to farmers and SHG members from Lathao and Bogamur villages.
While delivering the welcome address, the CEO of NOSAAP, Chau Athina Chauhai briefed about the purpose of this programme and spoke about Sustainable agriculture, which is a type of agriculture that focuses on producing long-term crops while having minimal effects on the environment. This type of agriculture tries to find a good balance between the need for food production and the preservation of the ecological system within the environment.
“We are excited to support sustainable agriculture by distributing these saplings,” said DDM NABARD, Kamal Roy. “These trees will provide livelihoods for years to come, and they will help to improve the environment.” These saplings will be helpful for the replenishment under the Integrated Tribal Development Project which was funded by NABARD last year where few mortalities were reported due to heavy monsoon. He requested beneficiaries to give special attention this year, take advice from experts while planting and follows the scientific procedures.
“We believe that everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment,” said ZPC Namsai, Nang Urmila Macheykhun in her address. “By distributing these saplings, we hope to inspire people to get involved in sustainable agriculture and help to create a more sustainable future”. She felt happy that such an innovative scheme could be carried out with the fund that the state government has provided through Panchayati Raj Department. She mentioned that the community should unitedly come forward and implement it efficiently as most of the farmers have abundant land and it can become a main source of income instead of pursuing only the limited job available in the state.
